Lucerne

This time in Zurich, I took a day trip to Lucerne which is 45 mins away from zurich by rail. Switzerland  is well know for its established transport network system, and railway train departs precisely on its scheduled departure time.

The railway ticket can be purchased either online on www.sbb.ch/en or personally at the ticket booth in Zurich main train
station. A return ticket cost 48CHF, and that's slightly cheaper than the
rate of the bus tour which cost 59CHF organised by the local tour companies.
Besides, you get to go around the beautiful city at your own pace, taking your
time to explore unbeaten paths much less visited by tourists.

On the scenic train ride, this is typically the view through the window. On a day with good weather,
you would probably be in luck to enjoy the scenic view of the alps.

Lucerne train station.

Its a pretty small city and easily accessible via foot. just out of the train station, this would be the view of the city just by Reuss River. Boat tours operate slightly later in the morning and it's probably a one hour cruise along the river from the pier.

Towards the left of the lake lies the iconic structure of Lucerne - Chapel Bridge or The Kapellbrücke. It is a covered wooden footbridge spanning diagonally across the Reuss River. Named after the nearby St. Peter's Chapel, the bridge is unique as it contains numerous interior paintings dating back to the 17th century, although many of them were destroyed along with most of the centuries old bridge in a 1993 fire. Subsequently restored, the Kapellbrücke is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe as well as the world's oldest surviving truss bridge.

Connected to it is the water tower, which was previously used built around 1300 as part of the city wall and used as an archive, treasury, prison and torture chamber.

Swans flock towards the shore of the river towards tourists feeding them with bread. Otherwise, they spend most of the time picking fleas on their bodies, which would be hard for you to snap a picture with them. They aren't scared of humans, so it's pretty easy to get up close. They just look picture perfect against the scenic mountain view and chapel bridge.

Walking further down along Russe River, discover the beautifully old town of Lucerne with buildings of unique architectural designs and painted facade. Painting the front of the building was fashionable in the olden days.

Reuss River running under Spreuerbridge. This is the region of spiked water level built between 1859-1860 to regulate the water level of Lake Lucerne. Many are amazed by the water flow difference before and after the spike.

During lunchtime, restaurants along the Russe River and chapel bridge are especially packed. It's a lively atmosphere with alfresco dining and street peddlers.

One of the swiss dishes that one should try is rosti. It originated from farmers who grated potatoes and fry the entire patty for breakfast. In swiss popular culture, rosti is only eaten in the German-speaking part of the country, and is portrayed as a stereotypical identifier of the Germanic culture.

The Lion Monument is found in a small park off the Lowenplatz. The carving of the dying lion commemorates the hundreds of swiss guards who were massacred during the French Revolution, when an armed mob stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.

Walking towards the right side of the river, expect to pass by yachts parked by the river, rows of symmetrically lined trees as it leads to the Swiss Museum of Transport.

Snow Mountain in the Summer - Mount Titlis

Mount Titlis is the highest mountain in the  portion of Urner Alps of Switzerland, standing tall at 3,238m. It is located on the border between the cantons of Obwalden and Berne in Switzerland, overlooking Engelberg,

Summertime may be the best time to visit a snow mountain, not only to avoid the sweltering summer heat, but also a period of time whereby the temperatures are bearable up in the mountains. In the summer, the temperature in Mt titlis would on an average be -1 degree, whereby it drops to a terribly low of -14 in the winter which wouldn't be ideal for much activities and hanging around.

To see a snow mountain isn't that easy in summer. It depends on the highest altitude of mountain and the period of time you happen to be there. Before spending that 146CHF embarking on a tour up the mountain, it is safer to check their website for live web camera views of the mountain to ensure it's not a wasted journey.  http://www.titlis.ch/en

Take a tour or self tour?
From Zurich to Titlis, there are tours operated by companies like Viators, Greyline, City-discovery etc at 146CHF. They bring you to Lake Lucerne, the Lion monument, and followed by some free time of 1+ hour in Lucerne. It is quite a rush in Lucerne. After the bus ride and travelling, the stay in Mount Titlis is effectively only 2 hours and you have to head back to join the tour thereafter or risk spending the night in the mountains. It depends whether you are interested to see Lucerne/have seen Lucerne. Would be great for first timer being able to see a variety of sights. If you are thinking of spending more time in the mountains, hiking, doing flower trails, or other mountainous activities, it would be better to take a train down to Engelberg and head up the mountains on a self-exploration trip. Moreover, the timing wise is much more flexible.

Getting up to Mount Titlis
1) The cable car station to Mount Titlis is in Engelberg. It can easily be reached via the rail to Englelberg. Walk to the bottom of the mountain and buy the tickets. A round trip return ticket for Mount Titlis cost 89CHF, while a one way ticket cost 63CHF.

There are cable car rides to Trusbee as well. There wouldn't be snow at Trusbee but there are fun filled activities there too.

The surrounding looks like this.

2) There are different lanes for different cable cars to different mountains so be sure to be in the correct line.

The ride is pretty steep and those who are afraid of heights should face the upward direction. Occasionally, the cable car ride bumps and ear block happens but it is totally fine.

3) Board the next cable car - Titlis Roatair - it is a rotating cable car.

Be greeted by an illuminated glacier cave from the entrance within the cable car station. Walking up the steps would lead to the top of the mountain.

The panaromic view of the snow capped mountain is breathtaking. Boots would be pretty essential to ensure a non-slip walking experience through the icy remains of the snow. It gets pretty slippery and uncomfortable wearing non protected footwear.

Walking forward would be the chairlift station. It cost 12 CHF for a return chair lift ride.

It's pretty fun hanging on the chair with legs dangling in the midair. It's a safe ride with safety bars locking your body in, a slow ride down the mountain to Glacier Park. Meanwhile, just enjoy the once in a lifetime mountain view!

Snowtubing is an alternative sledding experience down the snow on a rubber tyre. You can choose to sit or lie and whether to face backward or front. But anyhow, once you go down the slope, you will definitely spin a few rounds and get the adrenaline pumping.

Definitely fun! While you decided to have another go at it after the fun, dragging the snowtube back and up a slope would change your mind. Nevertheless, it is still a must-do!

Take the chairlift back up and just nice it stops right outside the start of the suspension bridge cliff walk.

Heading back down to civilisation via the same way as previously.

Along the way on the cable car ride, it was low enough to spot some cows living amongst the grazes. The most natural way of living not bounded by barriers and cages.

Zurich and Mt Rigi

Zurich was fun! Jo came over and bunked in with me. Expected Crowne Plaza room to be huge and nice, but its quite dissapointing! The room was tiny and hardly space to move around. Got a room with 2 single beds side by side, just nice for each of us to sleep comfortably!

Had lunchie at an Italian restaurant opposite the hotel, was fuming hungry since I hadn't had any proper food since touch down. Just some chocs and snacks.

The chef was quite thoughtful in seperating the pizaa into 2 portions for the both of us.

Zurich is relatively easy to get around with trams. Tickets can be purchased at the tram station with zonal prices. Ticket checkers come on randomly to trams to check your tickets, so it depends on your luck when you try to hitch a free ride.

Roaming around the city area and walking around randomly

Headed to H&M for some shopping! OMG, look at the doggie being chained by its owner when she shops. Poor dog!

I'm surprised that dogs are actually allowed in shops, but then again the dogs are really well trained and tamed. They don't go around sniffing strangers and making a nusiance. This doggie is so cute, its dragging along a lump of dust mixed with hair from the floor.

Hate it that the shops close so early, at like 6pm?

The view across the river.

Across the river houses the happening restaurants and bars after the shops are closed.

Dined at The Pasta Shop. Sells all pasta.

Had cabonara pasta in a smaller size, and the waiter says people have it for appetizer. It's like sooooo huge a plate and how can anyone have it for appetizer?!

Alfresco dining along the streets, and its possible cos the weather is awesome, not so warm and humid like in Singapore! Love it.

Jo with her Bombay Delights pasta, and it tastes like the Malay fried maggie!

Bought this bottle of green tea cos the bottle packaging looks very pretty!

We were supposed to go for a mountain tour to mount titilis which we booked through the hotel. It was 149 swiss franc and thought it was very expensive, thats close to $200sgd! So just 10 mins before the pickup time, Jo called the recption and said that "her friend" had a diarrhoea and wasn't able to make it to the tour. After some dillydally, we finally managed to cancel it and researched on how to make it to the mountains on our own!

If we wanted to go to Mount Titilis, we could take a train to Endelberg via Luzern, den take the rotair, which is a cable car up (cost about 70SF) However, when we were at the train station, the train ticket to Endelberg is 70SF, and adding up everything was much more than the tour itself! OHHNOO!

Luckily there was a tourist info service, and we headed there for some info. The guy at the counter was very nice and taught us how to get to Mount Rigi which was the easiest and most cost saving way. He even helped us purchase and print the ticket from the comp, gave us the necessary info for the train arrivals and timings! phewww he saved us for the day!

The train station with many platforms and trains, looks complicated but still relatively easy to find.

That's the train we took. I realised getting around europe seems quite easy and convenient with inter-city trains. Its much better than taking a flight, and seats are very comfy.

Alighted at Gouldau Station, and walked for another 10 minutes to take a tram to Mount Rigi

Tadaa. this is at the windows of the tram station! Looks so pretty!

The tram to Mount Rigi takes around 30 minutes to get to the top of the mountain, which is Rigi Kulm. It stops at various stops along the mountain, so you can alight where ever you want to, BUT the tram comes every 1 hours, so if alighted at the wrong stop, gotta get stucked there for an hour!

Its 12 noon and its starting to get hot, yet we are decked in cold wear to prepare for the cold! ohhnoo, wrong attire!

View along the way up to the mountain! Saw moomoos along the way!

Yays! At the top of the mountains now! The view is breathtakingly beautiful!

Decided to take the offbeaten path to explore the area. Glad we are here on our own instead of following a tour where we wouldn't have so much free and easy time to roam around.

This was what got us excited! MOOMOO at one part of the mountains!

Jo climbed up the slope to take pics of the cows and I followed suit!

Here's a dandelion!

The cows are so chillax, just eat sleep and look at nice mountains everyday. They are cornered by barbed fences in case they run off to other places.

nom nom nom!

Hahahah, this is sucha classic ricola ad! The cow and mountains.

Then we walked and walked to the other side of the mountain where we could see a bird's eye view of the bottom of the mountain!

Realised something interesting, and that is the patches of grass at the bottom appears to be in squarish blocks. Wondered what they did to it.

Had some light snacks at a hotel cafe at Rigi Kulm.

My fave victorian styled mirror in XXXL size!

Heeeheee posing at the standee!

The milkmaid dress looks quite cute!

Took a tram to the other side of the mountains to take a cable car. The doggie just layed there obediently!

Saw more cows along the way!

Interesting postcards. The swiss flag looks like an ambulance sign.

We boarded the cable car but it takes another 20 minutes before it starts moving! Luckily we were first to board and grabbed the best seats!

Then others boarded and these little kiddies sat on the floor with their ice creams. So cute!

OH NO! It started pouring and couldn't catch any nice views. It became misty and foggy. Nothing but raindrops and clouds.

When we reached the bottom of the mountain, we were stucked there cos if we take a bus to one of the train station to take a train back to Zurich, it would be kinda complicated. If we took a ferry to Luzern, we gotta wait 50mins for the next ferry and pay additional for ferry and train. So the best way was take the cable car back up and go back the way we came. What a long way back =(

By the time we're back at Zurich, its Sunset.

We were determined to get a taste of Swiss Cuisine, which was cheese fondue and rosti. The cheese fondue ordered has got cherry brandy in it and doesn't taste that nice. Was given squarish cut bread to dip in the cheese. Not that nice afterall!
